Circular Carpet Underlay

We discovered, when removing the old carpet, that the underlay was 100% recyclable, according to Airlay the manufacturer. Nice but what to do next we thought. Can’t put it in our recycling bin and what actually would happen to it if we scheduled a Council pickup. So we called the manufacturer and to our surprise, they agree to have one of their trucks swing by and pick it up.

We were told that the recycling industry was not set up to handle their product so they would need to take it back directly. They would then transport it to the underlay factory and remanufacture it into the new underlay. So we bundled it up, weighed it (more about that later) and low and behold Airlay came as promised and took it off to be reconstituted and given a new life.

While a great result it highlights the challenge that renovators are likely to face in trying to recycle this and many other similar products. But big thanks to Airlay.
